Miriam Basart
My art is influenced by my childhood. I grew up just outside war-torn London. At school, children came to class in striped sweaters. The sweaters were in various shades, with both thick and thin stripes. These garments were made from remnants of wool left over from other hand-knitted garments.
My first appreciation and interest in color came from a friend's house. His dad was a mural painter for theatrical stage sets. Our house had flowers everywhere, carpets, furniture and wallpaper. His house had orange walls and purple carpet---That meeting changed my life.
That image continues to flow through my life and my work.
In my textile art I lean towards old clothes. Cutting them up, examining the weave and texture; I imagine the worn clothes with a new life. What role will the jackets and trousers play next? Men's ties thrill me too. I pick them apart, wash and press them, cut them, reassemble them, they are then intricately hand stitched into interesting abstract patterns;
I love doing that.
Born 1941, London, England. I trained as a hairdresser and colorist. Some years later I moved to Germany for six years. My next stop was France for one year.
In 1971 I moved from Paris to the USA. Shortly after my move to the USA I opened my hair salon in Boulder, I owned the salon for eighteen years. Following the sale of my hairdressing business, I decided to follow my interest in the crafts medium I enrolled back again to college.
Art and Craft Schools enabled me to learn about textiles, garment construction and clothing design so that I could put my enthusiasm into my textile art.
